Ben Hutchings has been working in a diligent fever for the past three months to produce nine intricately drawn and constructed non-sequential cartoon dioramas specifically for nine on seven. Wielding cardboard, marker, screen tones, clear plastic, glue, styrofoam, pins, magnets and humour into 3-D OTT.
A must see.

This will be nine on seven's final show until the Spring so come and celebrate. Show running until end of July

Ben Hutchings' main love is comics and he's been trying to draw them for 16 years. He's created 25 comic books with titles such as 'You Stink & I Don't', 'Glenjamin' and 'Comics of Smallness' which appear in those scary little underground shops around Australia. His strip 'Tales From the Pub' appears weekly in Picture Magazine (page 36 if you want to avoid embarrassment) and is in it's fourth year, while his much-loved 'Lesson Master' appears in a spin-off mag. His drawings and animations appear now and then on CDs, websites, children's books and TV, and even on a gold coin series for the Royal Australian Mint. He recently launched his first music CD, Tootleg Boy, which has 280 songs about going to the toilet.
This is his first solo exhibition.

Touch my Holodeck , Seven of Nine

Currently when googling nine on seven the top result is always Seven of Nine. Jeez. During the early noughties all my Lady-loving-Lady friends would tune into Star Trek: Voyager. I always thought they liked the special effects and funny languages. Little did I know...Borg-a-lishious! Her human organs certainly knew how to reassert themselves after such a long Borg occupation! But, still I want to beat her....one day...Seven....one day

DMZ 2km Spring Water. Bottled ‘near’ the source. Korea’s Demilitarized Zone is now a rumoured oasis. Scattered with landmines and heavily fortified it has been untouched by humans since 1953. Some claim the small stretch of land is now home 2900 plant species/ 70 mammals/ 320 types of birds. Lotte has made a deal with South Korea’s military to start bottling spring water from a source that lies 2km within the DMZ and instead of the usual associations of danger and animosity the water is selling the ideas of purity, cleanliness and the unspoiled. Water from the wild.

The articles I read all featured the same image, a man in a white lab coat holding 2 bottles of ‘DMZ 2km’. On Flickr I found an image taken on the desk of 7/11, a mat advertising the water. A lush, green hillside, a deer drinking from a lake and in the foreground a stretch of barbed wire, ensuring the water is protected, kept out of reach of the impure touch of human hands. A constructed wilderness of our concept of wilderness.

On an island in the Arctic Svalbard Archipelago, built into the mountainside, under snow, under ground, is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. 130 metres above sea level, safe from the melting ice-caps. The complex is cooled by the surrounding permafrost. It houses 250 million individual seeds. White lab coats, clear plastic jars, repeating. Pristine/clean. Silver zip lock parcels in pale pine boxes. The “Doomsday Vault”, a concrete structure filled with seeds to replant, replenish, nourish.

Plastic, wood / barbed wire, deer. Going ‘wild’. Desire for the ‘pure’, the ‘untouched’, pristine, isolated, clean. Permafrost, cold soil, white snow. Untouched/uncompromised by man. Pristine / clean. Pure, pure, pure. Guarded, purity, security. Scientists in lab coats storing seeds, testing water, proving spotlessness, wholesomeness. Hard water, soft water, shampoo, natural oils, active, replenish, nourish, activate, revitalize, go wild, shower outside.

Wonder

For the opening of 'Captured' a week and a half ago I was excited to finally meet the artists whose work I had been admiring in photos for two months prior. In a bad turn of events Tim had a fall and was unable to come. Thankfully Wayne (Pictured with his work) and Alan were able to make it. Wayne has Down Syndrome and has been with Arts Project Australia for about 14 years. He has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and Internationally and has work in the National Gallery of Australia. He was excited to see his work up in lights, be on the rooftop and to have a beer all at the same time. I met Alan as the show was about to wind up. He came up with his carer and two other friends to see his work (Pictured).and the show. I was amazed to learn that Alan had created all of the ceramic pieces in the show with just 1% vision. He is legally blind and deaf and yet has been able to create such awesome pieces that are instruments designed to catch light! How beautiful! He observed all the pieces very closely and then wandered about to take in the stars and night skyline. I just wondered! It was fantastic to meet you both. I hope to meet Tim at the APA studio or exhibition one day. Thank you all for your great work!
