'Constant Boner' is a platonic synonym for "Life's ill".
Hamishi weighs perpetual blue balls against a ubiquitous state of arousal
while softly lowering his feet on either rung in attempt to create an equilibrium.
Whilst maintaining this balance, he contrasts mundane observations
and thoughts with glittery dreams and adventures which help him grow
proportionately. He documents this mortal combat in drawing,
painting, collage and sculpture in search of that fleeting
feeling of being able to explain the innate responsibility stowed
either deep inside of him or close to the surface in a hard to reach
place.

Hamishi makes selfish stuff, doesn't know very much, and does things
in Melbourne. He is 20. The symmetrical ones are more expensive.

In Copper & Oil, Sam Wallman's first solo exhibition, ideas of sustainability and human disconnect manifest in nine large, highly detailed political cartoons. The city exists as a metaphor for both triumph and doom, simultaneously - freedom and oppression sit along side one another on each city street. With humour and urgency, Wallman attempts to penetrate his audience with a skyscraper, while the buildings overhead reach down to crush us with only our own free will.

Sam Wallman is a person from Melbourne who draws humorous pictures concerned with tired hope, the environment and the politics of renewal.

nine on seven presents the second in a two-part series of works in graphite.
THE INS AND OUTS OF POKING is a collection of recent works completed by Cosima both at home and during a brief hiatus in Sri Lanka and India. The work is indicative of processes of change encountered from birth and enacted at the completion of different periods, endlessly. Whilst some works explore universal themes others are more personal in their purging and organising of experiences that Cosima seeks to share with pencil, pen and paper.

featuring a collection of nostalgic drawings by Betty Musgrove.

Thematically inspired by childhood and social nostalgia Betty has rendered

a series of wistful family snaps into iconic vignettes of family life.

She uses graphite to endow these intimate portraits a tonal quality

reminiscent of early Calotype photographs.

While predominantly an Illustrator Betty has a background

in textiles, print media and 3D collage.

The Inter Location Project ( ILP ) is an independent organisation formed to build a DIY arts bridge between the two cities of Jogjakarta, Indonesia and Melbourne, Australia.
Ten works featured in Rollin’ Contact have been especially produced by ILP Artists. Melbourne ILP Artists include: Snotrag, Tom Civil, Georg and Claire Alexander.                     ILP Artists from Yogyakarta are: Bayu Widodo, El Kampretto, Love Hate Love and Anton Subiyanto.
ILP formed during 2010 after several Melbourne Artists travelled to Yogyakarta throughout the year. The open welcome, cultural kinship and friendship shared was overwhelming. The Melbournians’ were immediately adopted as a part of the community by their Indonesian counterparts and immersed in a vibrantly expressive and creative environment. This culminated in the first ILP exhibition ‘AYO! Mix FUN” at Bayu Widodo’s Survive! Garage Art Space in July.
ILP aims to express and maintain varied forms of artistic and cultural dialogue, creative commonalities and friendship between the two cities. In an attempt to dissolve arbitrary International borders by extending and deepening creative ties. ILP’s mission is to echo the experience to their Indonesian friends by offering them the opportunity to travel here and be taken in as a part of Melbourne’s creative communities.

ILP has recently also taken on the additional mission of raising much needed funds for helping displaced people in their sister city in the wake of the Mt. Merapi volcano disaster. Since the devastating eruptions, only 40kms from Yogyakarta, ILP is providing practical solidarity to their Indonesian counterparts. Whilst still true to their original aspirations ILP firstly needs to ensure the health of these communities in providing aid and financial assistance.

Bikes have passed beyond being simply mechanical objects used for travel to become symbols of unity. They exist in our lives as companions, entering our lexicon and folklore through transit, speed and mobile revelry.

Rollin’ Contact draws from the terminology of physics to describe the point of contact between a wheel and its surface. Expanded broadly, it represents the themes of connection and commonality between people and bikes. Between bikes and art. Between art and people.

The exhibition will feature drawings, prints, hand-built mechanisms, silkscreens, photographic images, installations, design, video, paintings, sculptures, puppets and textiles that expand on the theme.

A component of the show comprises works by artists who form a part of the Inter-Location Project, (ILP). ILP is an independent organisation formed to build a DIY arts bridge between the two cities of Jogjakarta, Indonesia and Melbourne, Australia. A word from the Bureau of Meteorology: City Centre Max 29

Lauz has washed her hands of profundity in presenting Hide Your Shame a new collection of ridiculous drawings opening this Thursday from 6pm at nine on seven.
Various transcendental hangovers gifted Lauz abilities in dissecting the usual order of human form. Wielding a black marker and a roaming lucidity with a lithe left hand she reanimates and reforms these random parts back into an incongruous whole. She manifests thought as psychic geometric lines and colour atop these freakish composites. In Hide Your Shame Lauz demonstrates influences as broad as May Gibbs and Spaceballs and an unflinching, almost unrepentant, examination of relationships and RSI.

Lauz has recently added to her long accruing steez by being featured in the latest Semi-Permanent design book. She has exhibited works in the Inaugural Brunswick Show, Workshop and e55. In addition to participating in live drawing at Tape Projects and Irene Warehouse Street Art Festival. She is keen to become wildly famous through further unabated public exposure.

Melissa Reidy is a Melbourne based Artist working in illustration and drawing. Composed in pencil depicting improbable beings in improbable situations Reidy’s work often features feathers, men’s suits or ram’s horns. She is a consummate zine maker and sharer and has been a volunteer at Sticky Institute. Reidy’s comics have twice featured in the comics magazine ‘Tango’.

As an emerging curator Reidy has curated and shown in ‘The Undiscovered Press’ at Platform Artspace in February 2010 and in February 2011 will curate an exhibition as a part of the ‘I am Typewriter: The Melbourne Typewriter Block Party’ at Sticky Institute. She hopes to always be drawing. Even when she’s old and needs help getting out of her comfy chair.

Show description:

Animalia is a series of HB pencil drawings of hybrid beings presenting a visual portmanteau of species. Reidy’s jarring amalgamations are created out of playfulness and curiosity. She imagines the species existing in actuality through her use of zoological nomenclature. Each work is accompanied by a biological classification and an encyclopaedic entry. A description of migration, feeding and behavioural habits in addition to their habitat is listed; suspending our disbelief for a moment easing this creatures transition from unreal to real.

After an extended hiatus, a long winter and a complete restoration of the boxes

come along and celebrate one year of choice cubes, modular captivation and strong cider !!

Ben Hutchings has been working in a diligent fever for the past three months to produce nine intricately drawn and constructed non-sequential cartoon dioramas specifically for nine on seven. Wielding cardboard, marker, screen tones, clear plastic, glue, styrofoam, pins, magnets and humour into 3-D OTT.
A must see.
All works are available for sale.
There will be nourishing Mulled Wine to warm the hands and minds.
This will be nine on seven's final show until the Spring so come and celebrate. Show running until end of July

Ben Hutchings' main love is comics and he's been trying to draw them for 16 years. He's created 25 comic books with titles such as 'You Stink & I Don't', 'Glenjamin' and 'Comics of Smallness' which appear in those scary little underground shops around Australia. His strip 'Tales From the Pub' appears weekly in Picture Magazine (page 36 if you want to avoid embarrassment) and is in it's fourth year, while his much-loved 'Lesson Master' appears in a spin-off mag. His drawings and animations appear now and then on CDs, websites, children's books and TV, and even on a gold coin series for the Royal Australian Mint. He recently launched his first music CD, Tootleg Boy, which has 280 songs about going to the toilet.
This is his first solo exhibition.

I always thought they liked the special effects and funny languages. Little did I know...Borg-a-lishious! Her human organs certainly knew how to reassert themselves after such a long Borg occupation! DMZ 2km Spring Water. Bottled ‘near’ the source. Korea’s Demilitarized Zone is now a rumoured oasis. Scattered with landmines and heavily fortified it has been untouched by humans since 1953. Some claim the small stretch of land is now home 2900 plant species/ 70 mammals/ 320 types of birds. Lotte has made a deal with South Korea’s military to start bottling spring water from a source that lies 2km within the DMZ and instead of the usual associations of danger and animosity the water is selling the ideas of purity, cleanliness and the unspoiled. Water from the wild.

The articles I read all featured the same image, a man in a white lab coat holding 2 bottles of ‘DMZ 2km’. On Flickr I found an image taken on the desk of 7/11, a mat advertising the water. A lush, green hillside, a deer drinking from a lake and in the foreground a stretch of barbed wire, ensuring the water is protected, kept out of reach of the impure touch of human hands. A constructed wilderness of our concept of wilderness.

On an island in the Arctic Svalbard Archipelago, built into the mountainside, under snow, under ground, is the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. 130 metres above sea level, safe from the melting ice-caps. The complex is cooled by the surrounding permafrost. It houses 250 million individual seeds. White lab coats, clear plastic jars, repeating. Pristine/clean. Silver zip lock parcels in pale pine boxes. The “Doomsday Vault”, a concrete structure filled with seeds to replant, replenish, nourish.

Plastic, wood / barbed wire, deer. Going ‘wild’. Desire for the ‘pure’, the ‘untouched’, pristine, isolated, clean. Permafrost, cold soil, white snow. Untouched/uncompromised by man. Pristine / clean. Pure, pure, pure. Guarded, purity, security. Scientists in lab coats storing seeds, testing water, proving spotlessness, wholesomeness. Hard water, soft water, shampoo, natural oils, active, replenish, nourish, activate, revitalize, go wild, shower outside.

For the opening of 'Captured' a week and a half ago I was excited to finally meet the artists whose work I had been admiring in photos for two months prior. In a bad turn of events Tim had a fall and was unable to come. Thankfully Wayne (Pictured with his work) and Alan were able to make it. Wayne has Down Syndrome and has been with Arts Project Australia for about 14 years. He has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and Internationally and has work in the National Gallery of Australia. He was excited to see his work up in lights, be on the rooftop and to have a beer all at the same time. I met Alan as the show was about to wind up. He came up with his carer and two other friends to see his work (Pictured).and the show. I was amazed to learn that Alan had created all of the ceramic pieces in the show with just 1% vision. He is legally blind and deaf and yet has been able to create such awesome pieces that are instruments designed to catch light! How beautiful! He observed all the pieces very closely and then wandered about to take in the stars and night skyline. I just wondered! It was fantastic to meet you both. I hope to meet Tim at the APA studio or exhibition one day. Thank you all for your great work!

Arts Project Australia is a not-for-profit organisation committed to supporting people with disabilities becoming practitioners in the Visual Arts.

Captured is an exhibition of artwork by artists Tim Williams and Wayne Marnell exploring 2D portraiture and action shots of superheroes and fictional characters, alongside Alan Constable’s lyrical clay camera sculptures.

YOU'RE INVITED TO THE OPENING on Thursday April 15 from 6pm at nine on seven Artspace at the Rooftop Bar atop Curtin House - 252 Swanston Street, Melbourne VIC 3000

Running until Wednesday May 5th

Alan Constable’s finger marks clearly remain within his clay camera sculptures as traces of humanity. This enabled them to be seen as lyrical interpretations of what are very technical instruments. In this way, an Alan Constable camera can be viewed as an extension of the human body, rather than a direct replica.

Tim Williams’ world is populated by heroes and villains from films and books. His work is characterised by a strong and complex linear structure that creates both form and depth. Williams’ device of often incorporating the photographic source material into the work itself provides us with a fascinating window into the artist, his process and vision.

Wayne Marnell’s paintings and drawings often depict very free, yet angular lines. His work displays a highly individual use of space and perspective, often placing the viewer at a vantage point far above the action in the picture. Marnell’s favourite themes often relate to popular culture, fantasy and superheroes, which are keenly interpreted in the artworks exhibited in Captured.

Arts Project Australia was established in 1974 (Founded by Myra Hilgendorf OAM) and is currently located in Northcote.It provides artists with intellectual disabilities a studio space to work, a space to exhibit and sell their work, along side giving professional guidance and materials. They are an important organisation within the commutniy and see that artists are represented in maintsream art exhibitions and events.

Emerging from a bamboo thicket....ULA

ULA is the creative collision of Jac Eddy and Kasia Tons. They make clothes but if thier clothes were people they would be diagnosed with ADHD, get mistaken for charismatic cult leaders, speak the mumbo jumbo of witchdoctors and somehow pull themselves together long enough to teach a kid algebra. But, their clothes aren't people, they're clothes. After three date changes we are finally committing to the date March 19 to expose ULA to you all with a fashion show of sorts involving bird whistles, teepees, beautiful beings and nice sounds by MY FRIEND SAMUEL.
This is also the opening of the exhibition of ULA artwork at the NINE ON SEVEN gallery space at the same location.

The number nine has a special significance in Chinese society. Odd numbers denote masculinity or Yang. Nine, as the last single digit odd number, holds the title as supreme or ultimate masculine. Thus, becoming a symbol of the supreme sovereignity of the Emperor. The number was (and still is) an ever pervasive element througout the empire. Featuring prominently in it's palatial designs, structures, courtyards, number of types of dragons, number of dishes served at banquets and even the number of palace gate studs. LITTLE BOXES paintings by Kat Weir

The title and theme of Kat’s show references Malvina Reynolds’ 1962 folk tune of the same name. Malvina was an activist/housewife facing a dichotomous struggle between domestic bliss and domestic sameness. Kat’s fascination with the 1950’s and 60’s and all things kitsch, has nurtured her love/hate relationship with domesticity and suburban life. Her obsession with the aesthetic of these eras certainly doesn’t match the opportunistic ideal of the 'fulfilling' suburban lifestyle. It seems the trap of modern suburbia is easy to fall into!

With ‘Little Boxes’ Kat offers a fantastic solution. She intends to have her cupcakes and eat them too! She has made eight paintings: Four bachelors and four exotic pets, one to match every season. With corresponding colours and matching décor they offer this advice:

No matter what the season,
there will always be a man and a pet to match your outfit.
You'll never get bored!

Kat Weir has been drawing since she could hold a pencil.
She hails from New Zealand, where she completed her Fine Arts degree
in 2005. Kat has travelled the world and now lives in Melbourne.
She is currently working in North Fitzroy at Advanced Art (361 St Geroges Rd, North Fitzroy) where she has been tattooing for one year.

Leila is a Melbourne based photographer who graduated with a Diploma of Photography from RMIT in 2005. Since then she has been Photo Editor of RAVE, India’s biggest music magazine. She is a major band photographer for Inpress Magazine, Faster Louder, and Triple J’s jmag. Leila has exhibited in several group shows including Photo Biennale 2009, Linden Postcard, and Fluffy Gallery. She also photographs fashion, weddings, and websites commercially. This will be her first solo exhibition.

Circus is Melbourne photographer Leila Morrissey’s first solo exhibition. Swirling hula hoops from head to toe, balancing on a chair, slicing a teddy, hula-hooping with a straightjacket on, balancing on another performer… you name it, the performers captured in these images can do it. The exhibition reflects Leila’s fascination with the world of the circus – the combination of power and grace makes for compelling imagery, and these photos show the performers doing what they love, capturing them in the studio as they work their magic. These amazing artists who have worked all over Australia as well as the world, and their work make for a unique and thrilling series of photographs.
